It was photography that Frank Horvat described as “The art of not pushing the button”, but captured in that statement is the essence of what it is I search for in the music I write and listen to - knowing when not to play and where to leave or make space. I think each of these songs display this to a greater or lesser degree. It’s a constant struggle against the urge to add more, to fill it out and to recognise when something is finished. I think it’s our nature to want to make things better and we’re constantly told by the media that more is better. In the case of the music I listen to and write, less is most often more.
